Merit Corporate Scholarship winner

Eastside High School senior Irma Rahman is a winner of a Corporate-Sponsored Merit Scholarship, one of just 700 students nationwide to receive one of the prestigious scholarships.

The scholarship is one of three types awarded through the National Merit Scholarship Program, which recognizes distinguished high school seniors. In May, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which coordinates the program, will announce the winners of $2500 scholarships funded through the corporation. Then in June and July, a final round of winners of scholarships funded by colleges and universities will be announced.

Scholarship winners are selected from among students named Finalists in the National Merit program. Finalists are the top performers on both the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT college entrance exams, submit essays and teacher recommendations, and demonstrate outstanding leadership and active participation in extracurricular activities.

For this first round of scholarships, Finalists must also meet the criteria established by the corporation sponsoring the scholarship.

Rahman, a student in the rigorous International Baccalaureate program at Eastside High, received her scholarship from Leidos, Inc., a global science and technology firm.

Rahman is planning a career in neurosurgery.
