Lincoln Lyceum Student

"Why I Chose Lincoln and Why You Should Too!

Yeats Minson

When I first applied to Lincoln’s Lyceum program, I was hopeful but nervous. I applied because of the many recommendations I received from friends, but I had also heard that the workload could be heavy and difficult to keep up with. Despite this, I decided to try it, and it exceeded my every expectation. I was astonished at how well the school balances rigorous, advanced learning with a manageable amount of work, creating a well-rounded educational experience unlike any other school nearby. It also allows me to maintain a social life and participate in extracurriculars, as the homework is surprisingly reasonable.

Secondly, the elective teachers are very passionate about their roles here at Lincoln. For example, I joined the theatre program, and the teacher, Ms. Collins, is amazing! This year, we participated in Junior Thespians at districts, and our theatre troupe earned a total of 12 Top Honors, or perfect scores. Our troupe may be very serious, but don’t be afraid to apply even if you’re not confident in your abilities. I joined with no prior experience, and earlier this year—my 8th-grade year—I earned the lead male role in the fall production. If you are interested and willing to try, you should definitely give it a shot. I’ve also been able to participate in a variety of other teams and clubs, including chess club in 6th grade, the school’s Civics Bowl team—which won last year and the year before—and Math Olympiad, where our school earned first place both of the past two years. The elective courses and extracurricular opportunities at Lincoln have allowed me to shape my learning experience in so many meaningful ways.

Lincoln’s Lyceum program has also focused, in my experience, more on how to learn rather than just memorizing what a teacher lectures. In my current history class, Pre-AP World History, my teacher, Mr. Hicks, provides the content we need while also challenging us to ask questions about what we read. His approach has truly shifted our learning to be more centered on preparing for college and life afterward.

Overall, my experience at Lincoln has been the best for me because of its variety of instructional approaches, passionate teachers, and highly advanced, engaging academic environment. This school has certainly been a gift to me, and I believe it can provide an essential foundation for any child’s education. If you are interested in an academic program that challenges you at the level you need, you should definitely consider Lincoln Middle School’s Lyceum Program.
