Summer break can be a time for adolescents to rest and reset, but many still benefit from structure and routine. A schedule does not have to be strict, but regular sleep, movement, social interaction, and downtime can help support emotional wellbeing during the summer months.
Too little structure can sometimes lead to irritability, isolation, anxiety, or excessive screen time, while too much pressure can lead to stress and exhaustion. Let’s strike a balance!
Summer is also a good time to stay connected as a family. Small, consistent check-ins can make a big difference and help adolescents feel supported and emotionally safe.
💡 Tips for Parents and Guardians:
Keep communication open.
Create simple moments to check in throughout the week. Short conversations during meals, in the car, or before bed can help adolescents feel comfortable talking when something is wrong.
Try simple starters:
“What was the best part of your day?”
“How have you been feeling lately?”
“Is there anything stressing you out?”
“Do you want advice or just someone to listen?”
Encourage balance.
Help adolescents balance rest, movement, social interaction, and downtime. Summer does not need to be over-scheduled, but some structure can support emotional wellbeing.
Pay attention to changes.
Notice changes in mood, sleep, energy, motivation, or behavior. Sometimes emotional struggles show up in small ways before adolescents talk about them openly.
A calm, judgment-free environment with balanced structure can help adolescents feel safe asking for support, expressing emotions, and navigating challenges in healthy ways this summer.
